Guest room mini makeover on a budget

If you have been reading my posts for a while, you will know that I’m very impatient! You will also know that we have now renovated all the downstairs rooms in our house, and will starting upstairs very soon! Eek, exciting! Well, I’ve got a little bored of waiting so was looking for a quick fix, and decided to give the guest room a little makeover! Bad move! I thought I would be able to add some new bedding and a few accessories, and voila, a new look that I was happy with. I should have learned by now that it’s best to wait and start with a room plan or mood board to create a cohesive look. I think you may have guessed by now that I’m not happy with the result, as I can’t change the flooring or window dressing or light fixture or shelving!

I was inspired by the botanical look which I’ve seen everywhere:

I love the tropical print with blush, but as my son stays in this room quite often, I didn’t want it to be too girly, like the rest of the house!

This look is stunning with white furniture, but unfortunately I will have to keep the oak furniture, as it’s not very old.

This is a bit closer to how I envisaged the room, with the wood furniture and I  love the rattan lampshade. At the minute we have a rather ugly black and white fan light, but would love to change it for a rattan lampshade.

As we have some black touches left in the room, from when it was our sons room, I wondered if I could incorporate some monochrome touches with the green.

So this was how it looked before; plain and inoffensive but not very interesting!

I found this bedding in Primark, so it was really cheap! For the price, it’s not bad quality and as it doesn’t get used that often, I was prepared to take a risk on it! I added some little rattan boxes from Ikea, for interest.

I also picked up this little shelf in Primark for £10! I know the cork ‘Smile’ is a bit too big but that was another bargain in the Next sale at only £4! The ceramic cacti are from Ikea, £15 for a set of three.

As its not a full make over, the black shelves are staying until the room has an overhaul, but I’ve added a bit of greenery in the form of the ivy and the third of the cacti from the ceramic trio.

I still need a hanger for the terrarium and I’d love some copper lights.

So for a grand total of £63, the room has been transformed! But, it has made me realise that I much prefer a more subtle, neutral palette! It almost hurts my eyes when I walk into the room and isn’t my usual style at all. So although it was a cheap make over, it wont be staying! When we get on with renovating the bathrooms upstairs and I’ve made my mind up if I want wood or carpet floors in the bedrooms, I will be starting over with a mood board!
